Minto Ophthalmic Hospital , located on AV Road, Chamrajpet, opp Central Police Station, Bangalore - 560002 is a tertiary ophthalmic hospital which caters to the need of karnataka and also the neibhouring areas of other states. It is attached to the Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute and Research Institute autonomous institute of the Government of Karnataka.

Special ophthalmic service provided by the government in the form of a very small eye dispensary which was opened on 9th november 1896.The accomodation consisted of just a couple of rooms in a shop in the crowded bazaar(Chickpet) and Dr SV Ramaswamy Iyengar, M.D., who specialised in the subject, was its Medical Officer and the staff consisted of himself and a couple of servants. It started work with 9 outpatients on the first day.
This humble institution was transferred on the 1st january 1897 to the buildings in Lal-Bagh Road known as the “Lal- Bagh Lodge,” Provision was made here for 16 In- patients beds (12 males & 4 females). The average daily out patient attendance rose to 35 by 1903 and a number of operations were done every week. The In patient accomodation was subsequently gradually raised to 36 beds (25 for men and 11 for women). In 1910 the staff consisted of one Superintendent, one Sub – Assistant Surgeon, one Compounder, seven ward attendants and two helpers. There was no qualified nursing staff.
The necessity for a bigger and up- to-date hospital having been felt, the present hospital was planned and the foundation stone was graciously laid by His Highness the Maharaja of Mysore on the 17th December 1910 in commemoration of the Viceroyalty of His Excellency the Right-Honourable the Earl of Minto, G.C.M.G., G.M.S.I., G.M.I.E. the construction work occupied about two years and the Minto Ophthalmic Hospital was formally opened by His Highness the Maharaja on 31st January 1913.
In 1923 a set of rooms providing for 16 beds for women and children and called the “Seethamma ward” was endowed by the Late Mrs. Seethamma Krishna Iyengar.
New additional building for OPD block was opened on 22nd January 1965. Eye bank was established on 1st April 1970 and recognized by Government of Karnataka. Renamed as Kishinchand Chelaram Eye bank and Corneal grafting centre on 24th December 1975. 1986 - Vitreo retinal OPD facilities were started in main building . 1994 – Vitreo retinal department was shifted to present block with provision for OPD , In-patient , seminar hall , and O.T.
